Service Learning Plans for 5/28

When my group went to the reading terminal we had to do a worksheet. It was very interesting except for the part when we had to do all the math. If I could do it all over again I would do it so we can try different foods and just have fun.

Service Learning

May 9th so far what I learned about my group is that I am in a group with a lot of people that have different ideas on how to make food in our school better. So far I learned about my group that nutrtiion is a big part of lunch and by kids not eating healthy alot of bad things can happen. I learned about myself is that when you are working in a group full of females that it sometimes you have to bite your tounge because I already have an attitude problem and I don't need to deal with anyone elses, so I learned about myself is how to control my attitutde and to treat people with the same respect that give me and ot could be good or bad. If I was in charge of the group I would take the whole group out for lunch at the same resturant and see how fast the service went. I would also talk to the principal about doing a petition on better lunches. My plan for May 15 would be to take a class poll to see how many kids in the school have money everyday. Secondly I would write up a letter stating my concerns on the food we get in this school. I looked at a blog on community giving. In this group its talkes about selling ice cream and water ice for children in the hospital, I think thats awesome. You can get water ice or ice cream if you bring in a book. You have to bring in a new or used book for ice cream and they figured this would be easier then them paying five dollars for a book when they can just challenge there peers.

Service Learning

On Friday April 25 we had nutrtion group down stairs in the lunch room. When we was there we thought about things we can do to get better lunches and we also decided to figure out who we wanted our sponsors to be we chose to go out for lunch and do an reflection about it. So the next day on service learning we would go to the restaurant of our choice and we have to tell the group about our experience.

Outside Food Adventure

Today me and my group went out for lunch. We went to the gallery and the reason why we went there is because its closer. It took us about five minutes to get there, and then when we got there it was a litte croweded but I went to Chick - Fila. When we got there the service was pretty quick but the problem was that some people got the order wrong when me, Tihira, Sheeklah was done it was like 11:43. But we came in as a group we had to wait for Alliyah and Dawanye and then we was able to leave we returned to school at 11:55 we waas five minutes late but no one was able to eat because are lunch was to short. But other those complication the service was pretty good and it was fun to go out for lunch.

Service Learning

During service learning on Thursday my group and I talked in how to improve the group for the best. We talked about making better sandwhiches once a week we also talked about kicking Mrs.Thompson out because some people believe that she doesn't listen to are ideas. Well the people in my group want to do sandwhich wraps and fruit salads but in orders to that we need someone to listen to us. My job was trying to get student government in it to talk about going out for lunch. The expectations I have for my group is to get are luches changed permentally.

Service Learning

During Friday meeting in the nutrition group we talked about things we can do to improve the school lunches. The ideas we talked about were a salad bar, getting cooked food, and going out for lunch. The three aspects we need to improve are working together, having people look up ideas for people to help are school, and lastly having a positive attitude on the whole situation. The questions I still have about my group is what can I do to help are school get better lunches? another question I have is How can we persuade the principal to allow us to go out for lunch?

The website I went to was

DNA

I chose a topic on scientist find a DNA change that accounts for white skin. I picked this DNA discovery because its different from the rest of them. The reason I chose this topic because it stood out to me and I would like to what DNA says where white people come from. In this article it says skin-whitening mutation occured in Africa. Where all people were brown skinned. The person offspring thrived as humans moved north to Europe to give rise to the lightset of the worlds race. Students at Peen University found a discovery called the race gene when they defined race and how they says it shows how small a biological difference is reflected by skin color. This new found information is founded by a mutation change of just one letter of DNA code of 3.1 billion letters in humans genomes. This is the complete information for making a human being.

Bloom's Taxonomy

1.Knowledge - What happened when Jack and Bigger left the pool room?
-When they left the pool room they went to tehe movie theatre.

2. Comprehension - What differences exist between Bigger and Buddy?
-Bigger is the son that does not listen to his mother, he is also the man of his house. Buddy is the obedient son. He cares about his family.

3. Application - What factor cold have possibliy changed if Bigger was th eone found in the fire place?
-The incident wouldn't have made it to the press because he was blacka nd he already had a record.

4. Analysis - What were some of the motives behind Bigger starting a fight with us?
-Bigger was scared of robbing Old Blum's and Gus wasn't sure the he wanted to rob him so they started fighting.

5. Synthesis - Can you see a possible solution to Bigger scaring his sister with the rat?
-There could have been more possible solutions for Bigger when he killed the rat. He could of just tookthe rat to the trash like his mother asked him. Being the disobedient son instead of listening to his mother he scared his sister.

6 Evaluation - How would you have handled the situation when Mary told you that she wasn't going to the university?
-If I was the driver and she told me she was going to meet a friend and she wasn't going to the university I would of drove her where she wanted to go. Even though by doing that I could of got in trouble by her parents I wouldn't of cared. If I would of got in trouble I would of just took the blame because I know her parents wouldn't of believed me. Since I was black I could of lost my job and her parents wold of believed her because they think she is a good girl.

The Fear Inside

Summary -
Bigger and Gus entered the poolroom and it was empty. They were early and Jack or G.H. hadn't arrived yet so while they waited they started a game of pool. Bigger was playing very poorly because he was worrying about Blum's and the robbery, but he was really afraid of the whole thought. They continued to talk about their plan and thats when Jack and G.H. come in. Bigger hiding his fear tried to make himself feel better picked a fight with his Gus. Jack and G.H. ageed to rob Blum's but Gus was still thinking about it. Bigger got aggravated and started an arguement with Gus. While fighting Biger thought of stabbing him, kicking him, slapping him, and he even made Gus lick his knife. After teh fight they all agreed to their plan. By Bigger starting a fight with Gus that was a way to hide his fear and flip the script to make it seem as if Gus was scared. he hid his fear by acting tough and putting on a front for his friends. By doing that Gus was scrared of him and didn't know what he was capable of so he agreedto rob Old Blum's.

Analysis -
Richard Wright was trying to show us two things, the fear inside of Bigger and his fear of showing his friends and even his family who he was. Bigger putting on a front shows that his friends don't really know who he is and their wasn't no family bond between them. Maybe he is scared to show his friends who he really is and they would of took advantage of him because they would of thought he was tough anymore. By letting his guard down he wouldn't feel comfortable his himself. Alot of people hide their fears but some do it in other ways.

Murder of an heiress

Summary:
After a long night of partying and drinking Bigger and Mary returned to the Dalton house. Mary was a bit drunk so bigger decided to walk her to her room when they arrived Mary started to kiss on bigger, not resisting bigger kissed her back. Shortly after Mrs. Dalton came into Mary’s room, afraid Mary would make noise bigger covered her face with a pillow. She was straining to for him to let her go so she started to scratch his wrist. Once Mrs. Dalton left the room he let the pillow go and realized Mary was not responding. Scared out of his mind bigger picked Mary up, put her in a trunk and took her to the furnace before he took her out, he placed a pile of news paper down on the floor and stuck her in. shoving Mary’s head in was a tough task so he took his knife out and tried to cut her head off, when that didn’t work he found a hatchet and with one swing her head rolled onto the blood filled newspaper pill. He quickly shoved her head in and got rid of the newspaper and hatchet. When bigger got home that night boy was he paranoid. What he doesn’t realize is it was an accident and he could have easily confessed.

Analysis:
I believe Richard Wright put this in the book because it is the part in the book where bigger finds a strength he never knew he had, he has the power to assert himself against whites. “Wright’s point is that Bigger becomes a brutal killer precisely because the dominant white culture fears that he will become a brutal killer”.

Math Powerpoint: Bernhard Riemann

Science Fair

QUESTION: Will people use there right side of their body more than their left?
HYPOTHESIS: People will use their right side more than their left?
MATERIALS LIST:
• A ball
• A paper towel tube
• A phone
• Pen and paper

PROCEDURES:
Step 1: Find volunteers to do take the test.
Step 2: Once you find enough volunteers have them go through a series of test to see what part of there body is in more use.
Step 3: First you see what foot they use to kick the ball and record your data.
Step 4: Second you give them a paper towel tube and see what eye they put it up to, then record your data
Step 5: Third give them a phone and see what ear they put it up to and record your data.
Step 6: Lastly give them a pen and paper and see what hand they use to write on the paper with then record your data.
Step 7: Repeat steps three through four, for all your volunteers.

GRAPHS:
Criteria Right Left
Hand 25 4
Ear 22 7
Foot 17 11
Eye 19 10
Total 83 32
Criteria Right Left
Hand 14 8
Ear 10 11
Foot 9 12
Eye 11 10
Total 44 41

Female Graph Male Graph

Results: The data tables shows that the biggest difference was between the right and left handed girls. The table showed that the right hand is the most dominate between men and woman. In women there was a far more difference but with the other categories it was very close. If you look at the data table you can see that men had the closes dominate in right and left hand, but you can also see that in men that there wasn’t that much of a difference. So according to our data the right part of men and women were used the most but you can also see in men that the total was right near each other.

Conclusion: Our hypothesis was correct. We stated that people will use there right side more than there left. The reason why we say this is because the majority of the people our partners and we tested were right handed and used the right side of there body more than there left. We got some information off the computer to back up some of our opinions. One website talked the handedness between rights and left, it said that handedness can be described as a hand that performs faster on manual test, according to our data that is the right hand. However I’ve found some information on the right and left hemisphere of our brain. Some people may not know that are brain is split into two such like and apple cut in half, one side of the brain is the left and another is the left. The information that we found tells me the side of the brain is specific for speech production and language comprehension. The right hemisphere comes into play when people can’t understand a certain language. Therefore our data proved that the right part of the body is used the most.

Abstract

Our project is called are you Left or Right Sided. Our project consists of information based on the right and left dominance and hemisphere of your body. We have found some information that can help me with our experiment, We went to a website that told us about handedness, handedness can be describe as the hand that performs faster on manual tests. There are two type of handedness which is the left and right. We also found some information on the left and right hemisphere of your brain. It told me that your brain is split into two halves, which is a left and right side. We began to do further our search as we did so we began to think about what side of our body we use the most, we realized that we write with our right hand but we do most things with the left part of our body. We went to a website and it gave me some information that we found interesting. The web site said humans have the most obvious functional which is the left sides which is specialized in speech and language abilities. In the mid-1800s, Paul Broca a French neurosurgeon identified a particular area of the left hemisphere that plays a primary role in speech production. Shortly afterwards, a German neurologist, Carl Wernicke, identified another part of the left hemisphere primarily concerned with language comprehension. Therefore you can see above that the left side of your brain has to do with comprehending things and you speaking. The more one knows about the neurological mechanisms underlying language abilities, the more complicated these issues become, for example some people have problems speaking because there speech is specialize on the right hemisphere. However there is a great deal about brain lateralization that we may still not understand.

NHD Girard College History

Girard College and School Desegregation

Picture of Girard College

Stephen Girard

NHD Annotated Bibliography

Annotated Bibliography

Ms annotated bibliography tells about desegregation in Girard college. My first source is
Girard college History, Author: Elizabeth Laurent, in the history of Stephen Girard it told about what was the use of the college. He wanted to make a college for male boys who were poor, orphans, and white. While they attended the school they had to learn different things. He wanted to educate children to become a productive citizen. This source helps with my NHD because it states how Girard wanted a school for only males that were only white. This goes with conflict and compromise because the conflict is that only poor white males were allowed to attend this school. The compromise is when blacks were able to attend the school after a lengthy court battle.

My second source is School desegregation and civil rights stories Girard college Philadelphia Pennsylvania, The national archives, In this document they talked about brown vs. board of education and they also fought how they wouldn’t allow poor orphans in the school unless they were white. The Supreme Court finally passed in 1968 when the first African American was granted admission. This helps me with NHD because the topic conflict and compromise the reason why I say this is because the conflict was that Girard College wasn’t letting anyone in the school unless they were white. The compromise was that in 1968 African Americans were allowed to attend.

My third source The Gradual Integration of Girard College, Recording, “ During the civil rights movement many I situations changed their admission policy. Girard College in Philadelphia admitted its first black student after a lengthy court battle”. This source tells me how white students were allowed to be in the school but in order for blacks to be in the school they had to fight for what they wanted.

My fourth source a written Document.
Final Decree, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, et al v. Revelle W. Brown, et al, Civil Action No. 39494, July 5, 1967, United States District Court, The Eastern District of Pennsylvania, National Archives Mid Atlantic Branch. This document tells about who is allowed in the school and who is eligible. This document states if you are not white you cannot be admitted to the school. This is good for NHD because it’s a conflict because it states how Girard College wasn’t letting students in because they were black to be admitted to Girard College you had to be white and an orphan.

My fifth source is Notice to Attorneys, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, et al v. Revelle W. Brown, et al, Civil Action No. 39494, July 5, 1967, United States District Court, The Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and National Archives Mid Atlantic Branch. I quote the defendants are permanently enjoined from denying admission of poor male orphans to Girard college on the sole ground that they are not white. My opinion on this is that it is clearly wrong to deny children in need or anybody for the fact that they are black. This is unconstitutional and something needs to change.

My sixth source is The Small Elephant: Girard College The Small Elephant: Girard College, a summary from this document that read In his will dated February 16, 1830, Stephen Girard, a wealthy Philadelphia merchant, stipulated the establishment of a school for white males between six and eighteen years of age. Under the will, Girard having sincerely at heart the welfare of the City of Philadelphia left the principal part of his estate to the Mayor, Alderman and citizens of Philadelphia, their successors and assigns money for a number of charitable purposes of which the school was one. The purpose of these gifts was to foster the prosperity of the City, and the health and comfort of its inhabitants. This related to NHD because this is a conflict because it only talks about in his will he was only willing to help whites and basically he was saying forget about the African Americans because they don’t needs no help. I find this as a conflict because it’s wrong and there’s no way around that.

My seventh source is the school segregation cases, Janet Stevenson. A phrase that was written towards African American students “ GIVE US BACK OUR SCHOOLS NIGGERS GO BACK TO AFRICA.” Why this is a major conflict for NHD because it is pure wrong and disrespectful. This happened in Washington D.C when black student was admitted for the first time in 1954. The white students disagreed with the decisions so they wore placards that read.

My eighth source is Desegregation in Public school, Linda Brown. A summary of the case read on September of 1950 some parents tried to enroll there African American children and they were told that they couldn’t do so because they were in Washington D.C and they required separate schools for whites and blacks. The principal of the school said that it was a law created by the congress because Washington D.C is not a state and it is not in any state. The principal said he couldn’t do anything for the kids so he recommended the parents to take it to court. They did and it became known as the “SpottsWood Boiling Case”. This is a good choice for NHD because it goes back to conflict and compromise because it lets the world know that it wasn’t the school fault about the decision to have an all white school it was the congress. I think there decision was unfair and very racial for that fact because I believe that students should be able to mix with other races.

My ninth source is Tearing down 'The Wall' led to change; Cecil B. Moore led desegregation campaign against Girard College, Philadelphia Tribune, The Date: May 25, 2004 Author: McCoy, Lezlie B. This document talked about how Girard college was finally able to tear down the wall which talked about letting African Americans in the school. This document help me in NHD because it gives me information I need to know about Girard College and all that African Americans went through to attend that school.

My tenth source is A Messenger Sent From Heaven" Recalling the day Martin Luther King Jr. called for an end to Girard College's "whites only" policy. Philadelphia Weekly Date: January 20, 2004 Author: Anonymous. This document talks about what happen during the civil rights movement an the well known stone divider along Girard Avenue--known as College Wall--became a divisive symbol, based upon which side of the wall you stood. From the outside, the wall surrounding the 43-acre fortress appeared cold and sinister from the inside, warm and comforting. The children living outside the wall in North Philadelphia's crowded neighborhoods were mostly poor and black. The children living inside the wall--who received a free prep school education, swam in the indoor pools and ran through never-ending fun. This is good for NHD because it tells me what the symbol of the wall meant and how the lives of black and white were separated by it.
These are all my sources and the information that follows

NHD Topic Essay

Desegregation in Girard College

My topic is desegregation in Girard College. I chose this topic because it relates to NHD conflict and compromise. I say this because Stephen Girard bought this building and named it Girard College. Stephen whole philosophy was that he wanted to make a school for white orphan boys who didn’t have a father. Stephen vision was that his mission was he wanted to educate children to become productive citizens.

How did segregation come into play with Girard College? On February 16, 1830, Stephen Girard a wealthy Philadelphia merchant, stipulated the establishment of a school for white males between six and eighteen years of age this was in his will. In January 1848 Girard College opened for the education of white male orphans. An attorney named Raymond Pace Alexander who was an African American and he thought that the institution was municipal in nature. He said that the school racial discrimination was unconstitutional.

The board of city trusts tried to persuade Girard College to let African American boys in, but some of the board members decided against it so they said that the board was going against the 14th amendment and the brown decision from the brown vs. board of education. Thirteen years after brown decision a final ruling was affirmed by the supreme court that the school were permanently enjoyed from denying admission of poor male orphans on the sole ground that they are not white provided that they were qualified for admission. The first African American student was eventually granted admission to the school in 1968.

How does desegregation in Girard College go with my NHD topic conflict and compromise? The desegregation in Girard College goes with conflict and compromise because the conflict was that Stephen Girard who was a wealthy man and in his will he said he wanted a school made for white boys who was from the age of sixteen to eighteen who were and orphan. He made it clear that the boys had to be white the compromise was that it took a long time for them to go through this long trial and finally and African American student was admitted.
